The upcoming Assembly of Syndicate Shareholders of ECA, scheduled for October 5, will be organized by Armani Olimpia Milan at the prestigious Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday.
At the iconic backdrop of Lake Como, the owners’ summit will chart a groundbreaking new era for the Old Continent, expected to officially introduce eight new EuroLeague franchises. This board meets infrequently, convening only when it is vital to redefine the overarching strategy.
The stakes could not be higher. As noted by the Italian media outlet, shareholders are called upon to evaluate a potential proposal from the NBA to acquire the EuroLeague, which may be submitted following the NBA Board of Governors meeting. Alternatively, if a partnership is not pursued, the assembly will decide to move directly into the operational stage of the Transformational Strategic plan already presented to clubs by Chief Executive Officer Chus Bueno. This independent path foresees a massive transition to a closed franchise system, expanding the league to 24 teams, with 21 permanent franchises securing their spots for the 2027–28 season.
This process has already generated massive commercial momentum, drawing more than 20 formal expressions of interest. Eleven candidates have progressed to the advanced due diligence phase, submitting binding offers that represent nearly €700 million in franchise fees alone. The overall projected investment is expected to exceed €3.2 billion over the next five years, driving the league’s collective enterprise value toward a targeted €4.3 billion by 2027.
