Guerschon Yabusele sees a connection between Panathinaikos and the Boston Celtics that goes beyond their shared colors.
Speaking on Magenta TV’s “Pick n’ Roll,” the French big man discussed the similarities between the clubs and explained why he wanted to join Zeljko Obradovic’s team.
“I wanted to play for the best coach in the EuroLeague and alongside some of the best players. I wanted to join a top-level team that wants to be at the very top.”
Having experienced both European and NBA basketball, Yabusele acknowledged that direct comparisons are difficult. Still, Boston stood out when asked which NBA club reminded him of a European team.
“It’s difficult to make a comparison, but I’d say the Celtics and Panathinaikos because of the culture, the colors and Boston’s Irish heritage. Still, Europe and the NBA are different.”
Boston was one stop on a journey that also took him to China, Philadelphia, New York and Chicago. Looking back, Yabusele said he could not have anticipated the path his career would take.
“I never imagined my career would turn out this way. I played in China, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York. I try to stay grounded. As long as my family is doing well, I’m doing well.”
The different arenas and fan bases left their own impressions, including the support he experienced during difficult stretches.
“It’s been an incredible experience: different teams, different fans. Playing at Madison Square Garden was amazing. Going to TD Garden is a special experience. Playing in Philadelphia was incredible, too. The fans showed us love even when we were losing. My last stop, Chicago, was a different organization, but the fans were always there.”
The conversation also turned to NBA Europe. Yabusele welcomed the prospect of greater exposure and financial opportunities, extending beyond the players themselves.
“Personally, I think it could be a good thing. The NBA is the biggest market in sports, so why not use that exposure to grow, especially for the players? If it means more money for players, coaches, assistants and medical staff, why not?”
He pointed to London as an example of the cities that could benefit, while expressing a preference for cooperation between the NBA and the EuroLeague.
“If it can bring that exposure to places like London, one of the best cities in Europe, that would be great. I hope it goes well, but I want the EuroLeague and the NBA to work together. That would be very good for basketball in Europe.”
