Sarunas Jasikevicius admitted Valencia deserved its victory over Fenerbahce, pointing to a poor first half and his team’s inability to compete on the boards.
“The difference in physicality, especially in rebounding, was unacceptable,” Jasikevicius said. “We were consistently a step slower than Valencia.”
Fenerbahce improved after the break, but the Lithuanian coach felt his players abandoned the approach that had brought them back into the game.
“We showed character in the second half and came back through much better offense, not defense. But we played the final possessions really poorly. We went away from the offense that had been working and lost some discipline.”
His strongest criticism concerned Valencia’s offensive rebounding.
“We made some tactical changes in the second half to be more effective on the boards, but nothing worked. For the first time in my life, I saw a team grab nine offensive rebounds in a single quarter. As a coach, a player or a basketball fan, I’ve never seen anything like it. That is absolutely unacceptable.”
