Baskonia‘s season start is not going as dreamed. Poor results in the Euroleague (1-7), the surprising dismissal of Paolo Galbiati, the departure of Markus Howard, injuries… and now doubts about the continuity of Jose Querejeta as the owner of the Baskonia-Alavés group.
Since his arrival in 1988, Querejeta has been one of the pillars of the Vitoria-based team. On October 27, during the game against Real Madrid in the Euroleague, boos were heard at the Buesa Arena when he appeared. According to several Spanish media outlets, Jose might step aside and leave the presidency and management of the club.
The decisions, the results falling short of expectations, and the growing rift between the stands and the management could be the catalysts for a departure that would be historic in Spanish basketball. This reception against Real Madrid, a game in which they lost and were behind on the scoreboard throughout, could have marked a turning point.
Querejeta, also the owner of Alavés, is in the middle of negotiations to acquire the Buesa Arena and is one of the founding partners of the EuroLeague. Since reaching the top, the Baskonia executive has achieved several titles, the most recent being last season’s Copa del Rey with Galbiati at the helm.
The tense atmosphere in Vitoria with the team, and especially the decisions that have been made, might force a change in management that seemed unthinkable.
