Olimpia Milano have appointed Luca Banchi as head coach, 11 years after his first spell with the club ended.
Banchi led Milano to their first Italian league title of the Armani era and reached the EuroLeague playoffs during his tenure from 2013 to 2015.
“I’m honored to return to coach Olimpia Milano, with a heartfelt thanks to the owners, who felt I was the right person to lead the team at this particular moment, and to President Petrucci, for granting me the opportunity to continue as coach of the Italian national team,” Banchi said in the club’s announcement.
Taking over from Peppe Poeta, Banchi used his first statement back at Milano to address his predecessor directly.
“And, of course, my thoughts are going to my predecessor, Peppe Poeta, who, in such a short time, wrote indelible pages in the history of a club of this caliber. Aware of the responsibilities that await me, I embark on this new chapter of my career with the enthusiasm and determination of someone who wants to prove to be worthy of such a prestigious job.”
Banchi won 93 of his 140 games in charge of Milano. He went 68–20 in Italian league play, a 77.2 percent win rate that ranks second in club history behind Cesare Rubini.
Since leaving Milano, Banchi has won the FIBA Intercontinental Cup with AEK Athens and the Italian Super Cup with Virtus Bologna. He took Anadolu Efes to within one win of the EuroLeague Final Four in 2025 and led Latvia to a best-ever fifth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where he was named Best Coach. He has coached Italy since October 2025.
