Sports Director Nikola Vujcic flew to the United States and will meet with his former coach both in the Croatian national team and also in Maccabi during the 2006-07 season.
Spahija emerged as the top candidate for the job after the refusal of David Blatt to return to Israel. If Maccabi manages to persuade Spahija to leave the NBA, then this move can bring back tranquility to the bench of the club which changed five coaches this season.
Spahija has coached in Europe Lietuvos Rytas, Olimpija Ljubljuana, Cibona, Fenerbahce, Baskonia and Valencia. Since 2014 he has worked with the Atlanta Hawks.
