Felipe Reyes will remain at Real Madrid for at least two more seasons, until the end of the 2018/19 campaign. The player showed his delight in an exclusive interview with Realmadrid.com and Realmadrid TV: “I am very happy, pleased, and I hope that these years are very successful for Real Madrid basketball”.

You must be happy to have extended your contract for two more years

It was very easy because both sides wanted to renew and remain together for two years more. There was no problem. I want to thank President Florentino Pérez and Juan Carlos Sánchez for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to defend this shirt for two more years. I am very happy, pleased, and I hope that these years are very successful for Real Madrid basketball.

What are your objectives for the next season?

You think about a lot of things, but especially about preparing yourself really well because the season is going to be very tough. You have to work during the summer to be physically fit and go in to preseason in top condition. Also to steer clear of injuries during the year, which I’ve been lucky with until now. The important thing is to work well during the summer to go in to next season in top condition.

What is the secret of your longevity?

More than anything, hard work, effort, sacrifice and looking after myself. When you are a top level athlete, you should try harder and sacrifice some things that when you are not an athlete you can do without any worries. From the time I started I was clear that I had to work very hard and take care of everything I could to be physically fit.

On a personal level it has been a record year…

I’m very happy because it means that I have done well during my sports career, which are quite a few years already. I’m happy to enter the history of basketball and Real Madrid and now I want to increase those numbers and keep getting other records that are within my reach.

What advice would you give to youngsters who want to play basketball?

The most important thing is to have fun doing what you like. I have a great time playing basketball and I’ve been able to see many places and cultures that I would not otherwise have seen. That makes me happy and when you have fun doing your job everything is much easier and you can extend your sports career until 39, which is when I will finish my contract with Real Madrid.
