Slovenian center Alen Omic had a solid debut with Crvena Zvezda last night (26/1). Not only did he score 6 points and grab 6 rebounds in 15 minutes during his EuroLeague return, but his contribution also helped his team defeat powerhouse Olympiacos for the first time in the history of the franchise.

While the majority of fans gathered in “Hala Pionir” supported Omic and applauded him rather warmly, the Crvena Zvezda Ultras “Delije” protested against his arrival in the team with a banner saying: “Cefurs, (Bosnian) Muslims and Croats are not our brothers.”

“Cefurs” is a derogatory term used for Slovenians, Bosnians and Albanians and the part about “(Bosnian) Muslims” was a reference to Bosnian-born Omic.

While the player has declared himself an atheist in an interview that accompanied the announcement of his transfer by the official Crvena Zvezda website, his Bosnian roots are the reason why he’s considered a “persona non grata” by the most hardcore base of the team’s supporters.

Omic, 25, signed a deal with Crvena Zvezda for the remainder of the season.
