After losing a late-game thriller against Bayern Munich FC, Panathinaikos OPAP Athens easily got past Gran Canaria, 102-87 at home and improved to a 2-1 record on the season. The Spanish side fell to 1-2. This win marked Xavi Pascual’s 200th victory in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague competition.

Even though Gran Canaria started the game on the right foot (6-12), Panathinaikos responded perfectly with a 15-2 run (21-14) to end the first quarter. The Greek team was on another level in the second period, as Deshaun Thomas and Lukas Lekavicious were leading the way offensively. By halftime, the hosts were leading by 14 points (50-34). It is significant to note that ‘Pana’s bench scored 38 points in the first twenty minutes.

The hosts enjoyed an 18-point lead in the third quarter (68-50) as Keith Langford was creating for himself and finishing around the basket. The 35-year old had an impressive performance as he put up 16 points. In the fourth period, Panathinaikos held on to this double-digit lead until the final buzzer, scoring 101 points.

For the winning side, all twelve players scored, while five of them finished with double-digits. Ioannis Papapetrou had his best game for the ‘Greens’ as he scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. As for the visitors, Christopher Evans had 15 points.

“For sure we have a lot of things to improve, but we more or less played 30 good minutes in a row defensively and offensively. This is why we controlled the game and why we won this important game for us,” said Panathinaikos head coach, Xavi Pascual after the game.
