Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos said that Rick Pitino wants to stay as the team’s head coach.
Following his team winning the Greek League title, Giannakopoulos praised Pitino as “one of the best coaches in the world” before talking about whether the Hall of Fame coach will remain at the helm of the “Greens” next season.
“We have one of the best coaches in the world,” Giannakopoulos said to Cosmote TV. “Everyone’s will is that he will be finally convinced and he will stay so that we will do better [next season]. We agree on 101%. We have the same opinions on basketball and everything. He wants to stay and he has expressed his desire to do so. But there must be some talks on a family level. I want to believe that we will soon receive the pleasant news that he’ll stay.”
Pitino signed with Panathinaikos in December. He led the team to the EuroLeague playoffs after a major turnaround in the second leg of the regular season and then to win the Greek Cup and League title.
