Alba Berlin announced that cheerleaders won’t’ longer appear during breaks in the games of the team since the club considers that it’s not “appropriate.”

Here’s what Alba Managing Director said, per an announcement made by the German club:

“The ALBA dancers have done a great job over the past 25 years. They have been awarded several times the best dance team in Europe. The dancers have worked hard for it and they have tirelessly used their skills for our team and for Alba fans in the arena. I would like to express my appreciation for this commitment and to thank them wholeheartedly in the name of our club. However, we have come to the conclusion that the appearance of young women as attractive break fillers at sporting events, is no longer appropriate to our time. We are aware that no few fans will miss the ALBA dancers.”

“In our home games, an impression has been created according to which the women at Alba are mainly responsible for the dancing break entertainment while men play basketball. “The reality in our club is different: With our broad youth program, we have inspired girls and boys alike to join our sport. In the future, we want to promote even women in basketball as players, for them to become role models. We already have by far the largest girls and women’s’ basketball division in Germany. Our first women’s team has risen to the Bundesliga II a year ago. We will absorb and strengthen this dynamic with the goal that our women’s team will fight for the German Championship in a few years.”
