Miguel Angel Lopez Andrades was seen and heard calling FC Barcelona the “biggest band of rats in the EuroLeague” in the pre-game broadcast of Real Madrid TV last night. Real Madrid‘s team doctor issued the following apologizing statement today via Twitter.
“After the events that happened yesterday, I want to apologize to the sports entity FC Barcelona and in particular to the members of its basketball team, for my behavior.
Nothing is further from my intention to not incite any type of violence or disrespect to an entity for which I feel admiration for its ability to make each of its sections great.
For years I have been responsible for giving the shouts before the games, calling for fight and competitiveness, and the moment captured by the cameras is an unfortunate comment where the fervor of the situation that characterizes a “Clasico” led to an insult.
As a person, as an athlete and as a medical professional, I reiterate my regret and shame for what happened and I pray, that in the way possible, they can forgive me. “
However, the doctor is expected to be punished by the EuroLeague and a disciplinary procedure on his case has already started. FC Barcelona also asked his punishment via the following press release.
“FC Barcelona regrets the expressions used by the doctor of the Real Madrid basketball season team just minutes prior to the start of a “Clasico”, in this case in the Euroleague, which was played under the strictest sports normality.
These types of unfortunate expressions do nothing but encourage hate and we reject them completely.
FC Barcelona will leave in the hands of the Euroleague the measures it deems appropriate to take in this regard and hopes that the situation in which a group of players, technicians, and staff is clearly lacking in this regard, will not be repeated”.
