Alba Berlin led from start to finish en route to defeating Crvena Zvezda 93 – 80 and capturing its second straight win and third overall in nine games of the EuroLeague regular season.

Crvena Zvezda dropped to 2-7 after suffering its third consecutive loss.

Five players scored in double figures in what was a strong offensive game for Alba. Rokas Giedraitis finished with 22 points plus five rebounds, Luke Sikma posted 18 points and nine boards, Martin Hermannson scored 16, Niels Giffey had 13 points and Landry Nnoko 10 points. The “Albatrosses” were without Peyton Siva,  Tyler Cavanaugh and Stefan Peno.

“I think it was a good game for us… We wanted to step up and play good offense, good defense, and I think we did that today. We stopped Zvezda from rebounding after their shots. We are improving every day and I think it’s going to be good,” Giedraitis said.

Michael Ojo dropped 12 points in 17:42 minutes while Ognjen Kuzmic had 10 points for Red Stat. Two days after the defeat to Partizan Belgrade in the ABA League derby, the Serbian side found themselves trailing by 17, 42, 25, near the end of the first half.

Alba repelled every comeback attempt its opponents made to retain an advantage. When Red Star made it 79 – 70 in the mid of the fourth period, the hosts answered with triples by Giedraitis and Hermannson to take a 14-point lead, 87 -73 to enter the final lap at a safe position.

Overcoming injuries

Alba Berlin coach Aito Reneses was pleased with how his team played, especially considering the fact that it was missing a couple of key players.

“I am very happy with the good attitude and a very good effort from my players tonight,” Reneses said. “Winning is always better. But this schedule with games every two days is maybe too much for us. We have important injured players like Peyton Siva, Tyler Cavanaugh or Stefan Peno, and now also Johannes Thiemann went to hospital because he maybe has a concussion. But I am very happy with our fans, who understand the situation and help us a lot. I am not worried about winning or losing, but about keeping a good attitude.”
