Quickly recovering from a sluggish start, Iberostar Tenerife opened the 2020-21 Basketball Champions League Regular Season with a win, 98-73, versus the Bakken Bears Tuesday.

Giorgi Shermadini dominated the paint scoring 26 points behind 10/13 twos and grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. The Georgian center also dished out three assists for a game-high 34 efficiency rating. Tyler Cavanaugh threw in 14 more points.

“We are especially happy because for the first time in seven months we played in front of our fans,” pointed out Vidorreta in the post-game press conference, “They were only 200 fans, but we are really happy. This is the most important thing for me.”

The Danish outlet in its BCL group stage return went up seven early but failed to hold on much longer. Former VMI standout QJ Peterson registered 24 points and Michel Diouf followed with 13 enjoying a fast start at the Santiago Martin Arena.

“We knew this was going to be a tough job,” noted head coach Steffen Wich, “I am happy we won two quarters. That is a great start for us.”

Stretching a Champions League home winning streak to four games, Txus Vidorreta’s side got a 1-0 Group A record. The visitors fell to 0-1.
