Ibon Navarro is the new head coach of Unicaja Malaga

Unicaja Malaga announced that Ibon Navarro has taken over the head coaching duties in the team until the end of the season with an option to extend the cooperation further.

Per Unicaja:

Ibon Navarro will be the new coach of Unicaja at the head of a new project that starts today. The coach from Vitoria, at 45 years of age, has extensive experience in the Endesa League, where he has managed 4 different teams in the last 8 years. As an assistant he also has a long career that gives him great knowledge of the league. Navarro is already in Malaga to lead Unicaja’s training this morning.

Unicaja has a new coach. The club from Malaga has reached an agreement with coach Ibon Navarro (Vitoria, April 30, 1976) to lead the team until the end of the season with the option of extending the relationship with the desire to start a new project.

Trained in the Baskonia youth academy, in the 2007/08 season he joined the technical staff of the first team under the command of Neven Spahija. In Vitoria he was an assistant after Dusko Ivanovic, until in 2010 he went to Menorca as an assistant to Paco Olmos. With Olmos he went to Valencia Basket where he was part of the coaching staff for another two years together with Velimir Perasovic. In the 2013/14 campaign he returned to Baskonia, then Laboral Kutxa, as assistant to Sergio Scariolo first and then to Marco Crespi until November 2014 when the club from Vitoria placed him at the head of the team, a season in which he played in the Euroleague.

In Vitoria as a member of the coaching staff, he participated in the achievement of 2 ACB Leagues, 1 Copa del Rey and 2 Super Cups, and was runner-up in the Cup and the league, while in Valencia he was runner-up in the Cup and Eurocup.

In the 2015/16 and 16/17 seasons, he directed ICL Manresa as head coach and in 17/18 CB Murcia, which he led to the BCL Final Four. In 2018 he signs in Andorra where he has trained for three and a half seasons until three weeks ago, making the Pyrenean team a regular in the playoffs and the King’s Cup in recent seasons.

The new Unicaja coach is already in Malaga and this morning he will lead his first training session at the Martín Carpena.
