After two seasons without a team, the 59-year-old Spanish head coach Joan Plaza signed a two-year contract with AEK in the Greek League and in the Basketball Champions League.
Ending the Basketball Champions League in the Quarter-Finals against Hapoel Jerusalem and not making it to 2023 Final Four in Malaga, AEK was 6th in the Greek League Regular Season, losing against Vassilis Spanoulis’ Peristeri in the Quarter-Finals.
Starting his head coaching career in 2006, Joan Plaza has been on the benches of several high-level teams all around Europe. After coaching Real Madrid until 2009, the went on to become the head coach of Zalgiris Kaunas, Unicaja Malaga, Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Betis Sevilla.
