ALBA Berlin point guard Jack Kayil will miss several weeks after sustaining a calf muscle injury. The Basketball Champions League outfit and reigning easyCredit BBL champions in Germany updated the youngster’s status on Monday.
The setback leaves head coach Pedro Calles without a key playmaker moving deeper into the 2026–27 schedule, while halting Kayil’s momentum just months after the 2026 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm. The New York Knicks secured his rights with the 39th overall pick in the second round.
Rather than moving to North America immediately, he chose to develop in Europe. Kayil had even bypassed a commitment to Gonzaga to keep his name in the draft pool. In early August, the 20-year-old Berlin native also tied his future to ALBA by signing a five-year contract.
He earned NBA interest through a stellar breakout run last season while on loan at the Albatrosse. He guided his hometown club to a Bundesliga title. He also claimed the Best Young Player award in both the domestic league and the BCL.
Losing him hurts a roster facing two very different campaigns. In continental play, his side leads Group G with a 2–0 record, boosted by the NBA prospect’s averages of 9.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per contest. They want the top seed to secure a direct ticket to the Round of 16. Domestically, the team has stumbled to a 2–3 start after three consecutive losses, but advanced to the Quarterfinals of the BBL-Pokal shortly after Kayil was officially sidelined.
