Unicaja and the local Malaga government are working together to bring the Basketball Champions League Final Four back to the Costa del Sol in May, regional outlet SUR reported on Friday.
The season-ending tournament crowns the champion. For Unicaja, hosting the Final Four has emerged the ultimate goal during a special season that marks the club’s 50th anniversary. Management has planned a full calendar of celebratory events, but lifting a continental trophy at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena would certainly be the highlight of their half-century history.
Securing the event demands a projected €900,000 investment. This matches the budget Badalona approved for last year’s Final Four.
While Unicaja previously struggled under the intense pressure of playing at home during the Final Four in 2023 and being limited to fourth place, the significance of their golden jubilee can lead to a second opportunity on their home court. Aside from the Malaga and Badalona editions, other tournaments on Spanish soil went from San Cristobal de La Laguna in 2023 to Bilbao in 2017.
The organization maintains an excellent relationship with FIBA and holds a seat on the BCL’s Club Council, giving the city a strong position in ongoing talks. However, it remains unclear which other candidates might bid for the hosting rights.
The sporting stakes are high. The Malaga outfit is a clear championship contender and currently holds a 2–0 record in Group E of the Regular Season. Additionally, this year’s finalists are projected to earn spots in the debut season of a planned new top-tier league, widely labeled as NBA Europe.
