Rihards Lomazs, Ventspils stop Avellino from advancing to playoffs

Caleb Green and Keifer Sykes made a big push to the playoffs for Avellino but Rihards Lomazs and Ventspils had other plans.

Ousmane Drame tied the game at 90 sending it to overtime and Ventspils used that chance to grab a 106-102 home win over Sidigas Avellino on Day 14 of Basketball Champions League.

Rihards Lomazs banked 27 points for the winning side (5-9 triples) followed by Ingus Jakovics and Maris Gulbis’ 16 points each. Aaron Johnson notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists setting the new record for most assists in a regular season (105). Omar Cook’s 102 dimes from last season were the previous record.

For Avellino, Caleb Green was on fire with game-high 39 points (6-12 triples) along with 11 boards while Keifer Sykes nailed 29 points (5-9 triples) and eight assists.

Ventspils improved to 6-9 and will continue the season in FIBA Europe Cup as well as Avellino which fell to the 5th spot (7-7) after this loss and Le Mans and Nizhny Novgorod’s victories in the meantime.
