The CSKA Moscow legend Alzhan Zharmukhamedov played won the gold medal at the 1972 Olympics with the Soviet Union

Alzhan Zharmukhamedov, one of the last members of the 1972 Soviet Union team that beat the USA in Munich, passed away at 78 after fighting for a long time against a disease.

He was born in Uzbekistan and moved to Moscow in 1969, competing for CSKA for 11 seasons. There, he won the European Champions Cup (1971) and 10 USSR championships.

Most importantly, Zharmukhamedov achieved great success with the Soviet Union team, taking the first non-American gold of the Olympic Games in 1972. He also won the bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games.

He also won three EuroBasket (1967, 1971, 1979), while getting silver (1978) and bronze (1970) medals at the World Cup.
