FIBA held its final Central Board meeting of the 2014-2019 cycle today in Beijing. This term has been defined by four main pillars: developing National Member Federation, implementing a new calendar and competition system for both men and women, further developing FIBA’s 3×3 Basketball and uniting FIBA under the new governance.
During the meeting, the Central Board adopted a complete set of official rules for 3×3 basketball. It also defined the strategic objectives for the 2019-2023 term, which are to be presented at the XXI FIBA Congress Thursday, August 29. As the final preparations are taking place for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 tipping off on Saturday, a full status report was shared during the meeting with a focus on the extensive global promotional activities.
A new Central Board for the upcoming term of 2019-2023 will be elected during the Congress tomorrow in Beijing, and will then meet for the first time on Saturday, September 14. The election of a new President and Treasurer will occur at the same occasion.
Numerous successes have been evident during the 2014-2019 cycle with 181 National Federations being visited to assess each organization to help develop and implement strategies. A program structure has been established and a set of upcoming activities, including a tailor-made process for 24 targeted national federations. Also, the launch of the new competition system has been a success with the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers 2019 proving to be extremely popular among the basketball community. Another huge achievement is the addition of 3×3 Basketball into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the effective implementation of ONE FIBA governance across the five regions.
