The 21st FIBA Congress concluded today (30/8) and the outgoing FIBA President Horacio Muratore was named Honorary President by unanimous decision.
Per FIBA:
During the XXI FIBA Congress, which concluded today, outgoing FIBA President Horacio Muratore was named Honorary President by unanimous decision of the 156 National Federations present.
Horacio Muratore was FIBA Americas Vice-President from 2006 to 2009, FIBA Americas President from 2009 to 2014, FIBA Vice-President from 2010 to 2014 and was unanimously elected as the 12th FIBA President on August 29, 2014 during the elective Congress in Sevilla, Spain.
Prior to FIBA he was President of the Tucuman Basketball Federation for 10 years and served as a member in the representation of the associations in Argentina of the CEMBA 90 Executive Committee, which was responsible for organizing the 1990 FIBA Basketball World Cup in the country..
President Muratore was then elected to lead the Confederación Argentina de Basquetbol (CABB) for 16 years and he presided over the CABB during the “Golden Generation” that saw the men’s national team take a second-place finish at the 2002 FIBA Basketball World Cup and win Olympic gold at the 2004 Athens Games and bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.
From 1993 to 2006 he also chaired the South American Basketball Confederation and created the Liga Sudamericana in 1995. He then became a member of the FIBA Central Board in 2002.
Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said, “When I am asked to describe our President I say, this is a man who has climbed every single step of the FIBA ladder. He has been at every level – club, regional association, National Federation with a gold Olympic medal, sub zone President, Zone President, then in the last 5 years our President of FIBA, and with the recommendation of the Central Board as of today Honorary President of FIBA. Everything he has done for FIBA has been for the good of basketball and I thank him for his presidency and his mentorship”.
Horacio Muratore said, “Today has been an emotional day for me with the completion of my last Congress as President. Receiving this title really means a lot to me and my family. I will honor this position and will always be ready to help FIBA, help the National Federations and help basketball.”
