The 2023 FIBA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Indonesia, Japan, and Philippines between 25 August and 10 September. Despite being among the co-hosts, Indonesia needs to rank among the top eight teams of the 2021 Asia Cup to debut in the World Cup, otherwise will go through the Asian qualifiers, FIBA clarified via press release on Monday.

Per FIBA: “FIBA’s Executive Committee has determined the sporting target for co-host Indonesia to be granted automatic qualification to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The men’s national team needs to be ranked among the top eight teams at the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 in order to receive qualification.

The two other co-host nations of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Japan and the Philippines, who both played in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, have received direct qualification. Indonesia will get a chance to make history through the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2021 next year.

The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 is Asia and Oceania’s premier men’s national team competition taking place every four years. For the first time ever, national teams need to qualify for the competition through a number of home and away qualifiers, which began in February this year. The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will take place from August 17 to 29, with a total of 16 teams.

If Indonesia achieves the target of making the top eight of the FIBA Asia Cup in 2021, the number of qualification spots for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers will be reduced by one. If Indonesia does not achieve the target, the general rules for qualification to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 applicable to other Asia and Oceania National Federations shall apply.

For the first time in the competition’s history, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, will be staged in more than one host country. The Group Phase will take place in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, with the Final Phase to follow in the Philippine capital city of Manila.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will once again feature 32 national teams from around the world, with the expanded format adopted for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China, FIBA’s biggest event to date.

Qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will take place from November 2021 to February 2023, with 80 national teams competing for a spot in the World Cup.”
