The Federación Dominicana de Baloncesto (FEBOMBAL) has unveiled the preliminary roster for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup, featuring several NBA players, starting with Al Horford and Karl-Anthony Towns among them.
Towns is coming off a season where he averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a season that was shortened by injury. The 27-year-old last played for the senior national team at the FIBA AmeriCup in 2013.
Chris Duarte, fresh off an impressive rookie season with the Indiana Pacers (averaging 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game), will also be part of the roster, although he’ll be representing the Sacramento Kings in the upcoming season.
Alongside these players are two promising talents, Ulm’s newcomer LJ Figueroa and Golden State Warriors Lester Quinones, as well as seasoned veterans Victor Liz and Angel Delgado.
Notably, Andrés Feliz and Eloy Vargas played in every game during the Americas Qualifiers, helping the Dominican Republic secure a second-place finish in Group E with a 9-3 record.
The team’s vital World Cup spot was clinched with the impressive performance of 20-year-old rising star Jean Montero, who scored 22 points in just 20 minutes of play.
Excitement builds as the Dominican Republic proceeds with preparation games against formidable opponents like Puerto Rico, Latvia, Spain, and Canada. These games will provide fans with a clearer view of the final roster.
The team’s journey will then take them to Manila, Philippines, where they will face Angola, Italy, and co-hosts Philippines in Group A.
