MANILA, Philippines – On the 2023 FIBA World Cup opener, Italy managed to beat Angola 81-67, despite some difficulties at the beginning of the game. After starting it slow, the Italian national team found a new life dragged by Stefano Tonut, who spoke in the mixed zone after the win.

“It was a game tightened until the very end. We did not underestimate the opponent. I think we started out more emotional than for this reason, and here there is balance with all. We take home the result, we will review the game to prepare for Sunday will be important”, Olimpia Milan’s guard said.

Italy’s number 7 was crucial in a rough night from beyond the arc by Gianmarco Pozzecco’s team, being one of the few on the winning side to attack the rim and finishing with 18 points (5/8 FG and 8/8 FT).

“It was very important to not get nervous, especially after the contracted start. We stayed there as a team, compact. That’s what got us here. In 8 games we had different protagonists and that’s what makes us a tight-knit group. Emotion can make bad jokes but we’re on track”, he went on saying.
