The first round of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers in Asia wrapped up following a thrilling slate of games spanning multiple time zones on Sunday and Monday.
The most dramatic showdown saw Korea narrowly edge out Japan in an 81–79 thriller. Japan’s defeat was sealed in the final moments when Josh Hawkinson missed a crucial free throw, spoiling his otherwise dominant performance of 30 points and 12 rebounds. With the initial phase complete, China and Korea secured the final tickets to the second stage starting this August.
Elsewhere, Australia dominated the Philippines, and New Zealand crushed Guam behind Taine Murray’s seven three-pointers, while Iran, Lebanon, Qatar, and Jordan all cruised to decisive victories.
