While, theoretically, players of the Chinese League wouldn’t have a problem participating in the World Cup Qualifiers, an issue appeared with Donatas Motiejunas.

The Shandong Golden Stars rejected a request by the Lithuanian Basketball Federation to allow Donatas Motiejunas to join his country’s national team during the Windows for the World Cup Qualifiers, according to Lithuanian journalist Donatas Urbonas.

This news comes as a surprise since there shouldn’t have been a problem with Chinese teams releasing their players to play in the November and February games of the Qualifiers. According to the same report, the club doesn’t want to risk a possible injury, or maybe the player himself doesn’t want to be part of the team.

Motiejunas, 27, signed with the Shandong Golden Stars on summer after a five-year stint in the NBA with the Houston Rockets and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Lithuania will face Kosovo (November 23 and February 26), Poland (November 26) and Hungary (February 23) for Group C during the Windows.
