The first World Cup after the split from Czechoslovakia for the Czech Republic now features a win. Following the loss to USA, Ronen Ginzburg’s side went over Japan, 89-76, in 2019 FIBA World Cup Group E action at Shanghai on Tuesday.
Blake Schilb starred with 22 points on 8/11 from the field including 6/7 beyond the arc. “We did a pretty good job controlling Hachimura even though he scored 21 points” he said in the post-game press conference. “Shots went in for us, hopefully, they continue.”
Jaromir Bohacik also got 22 points making 4/10 three-pointers. Tomas Satoransky was held to 5/13 field goals, but added 15 points, dished 7 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Avoiding turnovers was the key. Ginzburg’s players protected the ball, hit 49% from two-point range and 44% from three-point range to seal the victory.
“Crucial win for us” the winning side’s head coach commented after the match. “We did not play great but managed to win the game. Czech Republic’s first win is a great honor for us.”
The Czechs are now 1-1 ahead of their final Group E match versus Turkey that later today will face Team USA. Thursday’s game will likely advance the winning side to the second round and hold the losing side to classification contests.
Japan went the other way dropping to 0-2 before the game versus the USA. The Asian team tasted defeat for the ninth time in as much World Cup games against European sides.
“Basketball is growing in Japan. A lot of people came to the friendly games” Rui Hachimura noted following the match. “As players, we have to show more resolve.”
The rookie of the Washington Wizards scored 21 points with 8/11 two-pointers but was not enough. Yuta Watanabe had 11 at halftime and ended up with 15, Nick Fazekas notched a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double before fouling out.
“We competed today, but our defense was not good enough to win” mentioned head coach Julio Lamas after the game. “We need to improve to have a chance to win games in the World Cup.”
