Despite a slow start and a bad shooting night, Spain managed to get a 73-65 win over Iran in Group C of FIBA World Cup.

Spain won all three of its games so far and stayed at the top of the group while Iran lost all three and finished last. Puerto Rico (2-1) got the better of Tunisia (1-2) earlier today and advanced further.

Marc Gasol led the winning side with 16 points while Victor Claver and Juancho Hernangomez added 11 each. The latter also grabbed ten rebounds for a double-double.

Mohammad Jamshidijafarabadi scored 15 followed by Michael Rostampour’s 13 points while Hamed Haddadi banked ten points and 15 rebounds.

Iran had a great start scoring the first ten points but Spain quickly reacted although Iran had a 21-18 lead after ten minutes. However, Spain was slightly better in the second quarter and grabbed a 33-31 advantage by halftime.

It seemed as though Spain will stroll to victory after going ahead 52-43 but Iran made a 10-0 run to secure a minimal lead in front of the final ten minutes. Iran kept the game balanced (65-65) against Spain which shot 9-30 from behind the arc but Sergio Llull’s triple sparked an 8-0 run for the Spaniards with which they sealed the deal.
