Beijing– Serbia head coach Sasha Djordjevic announced that he’s stepping down from the national team following the win over the Czech Republic in the fifth-place game of the FIBA World Cup.

“I heard about it. Yes, it’s true. Yes, I’m leaving,” Djordjevic said during the post-game presser, when asked about a report in Serbian media regarding him leaving the team. The “Orlovi” had entered the tournament being widely considered as the gold medal frontrunners but were eliminated by Argentina in the quarterfinals.

“I would’ve left the team after the World Cup even if we had achieved our goals. It was a decision I made before the summer,” Djordjevic elaborated on his decision while talking to Serbian media, per FIBA’s Igor Curkovic.

Djordjevic was appointed Serbian head coach in 2013, succeeding Dusan Ivkovic. With Djordjevic at the helm, Serbia won the silver medal in the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2017 EuroBasket.
