After today’s hearing by the Greek committee for professional sports, the Greek federation president, Vaggelis Liolios, is fined 50,000 euros, and the certificate granted to Promotheas Patras for the 2025-26 season is revoked.
According to the Greek sports law, the Greek committee for professional sports (EEA) has to grant a certificate to all professional teams to participate in any major local sports league, and Marousi BC has filed an official complaint supporting that Liolios still acts as Promitheas president, using his influence in favor of his team.
For the moment, that means the committee’s decision to approve the sale of Promitheas Patras to Athanasios Triantafyllidis (30%), Charalambos Michalopoulos (30%), and Angelos Zannis (24,62%) in July of 2020 is annulled.
A fine of 15.000 euros is imposed for this aspect of the case, while the 50.000 fine to Liolios is justified by the article of the law, which prevents “a person related and associated in any way with the club, with the tolerance of the Administration, without compliance with the provisions of the sports law”.
Liolios reacted with the following statement: “Alas, if by using a simple committee (which I respect institutionally), whose members were proposed by the Minister of Sports, some people believe that with arbitrary and illegal decisions taken, they will blackmail or intimidate me.
A committee in which, unfortunately, some members found the opportunity to give their credentials in order to build a political career in the upcoming elections. Very soon, all those involved will be held accountable before a court of law. At this moment, much more serious issues for Greek basketball are at stake. Everything and everyone in due time…
Also, to inform the sports-loving public and to avoid misinformation from known and unknown people, which has been happening for some time, the following should be emphasized:
As President of the Federation, I have the legal right to be a shareholder or even a member of the Board of Directors of any club I wish.
There is absolutely no incompatibility or obstacle to that in the sports laws. I did not want it because this was my personal choice. If at some point in the future I wish to do something like this, it is at my discretion to do so. Absolutely NO ONE is in a position to force me to do it or to deny me this right”.
