Olympiacos announced on Monday that a criminal complaint filed by Despina Giannakopoulou, daughter of Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos, against its vice president Giorgos Skindilias had been deemed unfounded and definitively shelved.

The complaint stemmed from events surrounding Game 2 of the Greek league finals at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in June 2025. According to Olympiacos, it led to Skindilias being arrested and taken to a police station while recovering from surgery.

The club also stated that a separate case concerning Dimitris Giannakopoulos’ conduct had been referred to the competent court. At the time of the incidents, Giannakopoulos had disputed allegations against him and announced legal action of his own, alleging defamatory statements and abusive chants targeting his daughter.

Olympiacos concluded its latest statement with criticism of social media activity, saying that its management preferred to turn to the Greek justice system and await its decisions.

Olympiacos’ statement in full:

“In June 2025, we all witnessed Dimitris Giannakopoulos’ inconceivable behavior during his visit to the Peace and Friendship Stadium for Game 2 of the playoff finals.

His hurried departure under escort was followed by the filing of spurious criminal complaints, with the perpetrators posing as victims. One such complaint was filed by his daughter, Despina Giannakopoulou, against Olympiacos BC vice president Giorgos Skindilias. She even demanded that the expedited arrest procedure be followed, leading to his arrest and being taken to a police station while he was recovering from surgery.

We issued a statement at the time saying: ‘Neither Olympiacos BC nor its presidents threaten children with sexual acts or put them up to filing false criminal complaints.’ Vindication was not long in coming. Despina Giannakopoulou’s complaint was deemed unfounded and definitively shelved. As for Dimitris Giannakopoulos’ actions, those have been referred to the competent court for judgment.

While others live on social media, seeking likes and followers, Olympiacos BC and its management prefer to turn to the impartial Greek justice system and await its judgment.”
