Pyrrhic victory for Olympiacos after Birch’s injury

Olympiacos defeated Promitheas Patras on the road and remained first in the Greek Basket League but lost Khem Birch in the process.

Thanks to a dominant second half Olympiacos prevailed over Promitheas in Patras 72 – 53 and got its 24th victory in 25th games. With one game remaining game remaining in the regular season, the defending champs are very close to locking first place and have home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Yet the victory of the Reds was shadowed the injury of Khem Birch who suffered a sprained ankle in the first half. The Canadian center will undergo examinations that will reveal the exact length of the damage ahead of the EuroLeague playoffs against Anadolu Efes.

On to the game, after closing the first half ahead 28 – 32, Olympiacos improved its efforts and cruised towards win in the end. Kostas Papanikolaou scored 14 and Vassilis Spanoulis 10 for the winners.

Lucky Jones had 13 points and 5 rebounds for Promitheas that ninth in the standings with a 10 – 15 record.

Earlier, Panathinaikos overpowered Rethimno to remain tied with Olympiacos at the first place, albeit with the tiebreaker belonging to the Reds.
