Pallacanestro Varese is penalized by 16 points for failing to comply with payment of all obligations towards its registered players, per the official statement of the Italian Basketball Federation.

For the same reason, the president of the club, Marco Vittorelli, was banned for three years until 13 April 2026.

Following the referral from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for sports fraud and illegal sports activities, the Federal Court deducted Varese’s points, and after the penalty put them to the last place in the Legbasket standings, four points behind Tezenis Verona, and six from safety.

Varese had a good season, achieved a 14-11 score after 25 rounds, and was sitting at No. 5 place in the standings before being penalized.

Now they will fight to survive in the top tier of Italian basketball with five games against Trieste, Brindisi, Venise, Scafati, and Virtus Bologna remaining.

Of course, the club has already announced that they will appeal the decision.

Per the press release:

“Pallacanestro Varese learns with bewilderment and amazement the measures adopted today by the Federal Court and which refer to events that occurred years ago. Believing that we have not violated any federal law, we await the reasons to understand the causes of an unexpected decision.

We, therefore, announce that we will immediately file a complaint with the Federal Court of Appeals so that our legitimate defenses are upheld”
