A record that stood for almost 23 years and was set by a true European Basketball legend was broken last night in the Italian League.

With the 18 dimes he sent to his teammates in the game between Brescia and Cremona, Luca Vitali broke Toni Kukoc’s Italian League single-game assist record that he set in 1992-1993. The great Croatian had finished a game between Benetton Treviso and Virtus Roma (80 – 63) back then with 16 assists.

Not only did Vitali surpass this achievement, dishing out 18 assists, but made buckets as well, scoring 12 points as his team cruised to a 95 – 66 victory.

Three other players had been been able to tie Kukoc’s number: Marques Green (2007-2008, helping Avellino beat Benetton Treviso 80 – 63) Dee Brown (2009-2010 in a 102 – 90 victory of Avellino vs Teramo) and Ronald Moore during last season’s 103 – 75 win of Pistoia over Capo D’Orlando.
