Kazys Maksvytis officially took over the Lithuania national team as the new head coach. With a new president elected last week in the Lithuanian basketball federation as Vydas Gedvilas took over from basketball icon Arvydas Sabonis who stepped down and didn’t run, Maksvytis will have the chance to continue his own legacy in the Lithuanian national teams.

Maksvytis coached the 1992 generation of the Lithuanian national team in youth competitions, winning three European and one World Cup gold with them.

Players like Jonas Valanciunas, Rokas Giedraitis, Edgaras Ulanovas, and Arnas Butkevicius are part of that generation and all of them played this past summer for the national team. Lithuania failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, getting eliminated by Slovenia at the last step.

Since 2012 and the last gold with the national team, the 44-year-old expert coached Neptunas in two stints, Lietkabelis, and PARMA.
