Spain head coach Sergio Scariolo could leave the national team following the completion of the June-July window of the World Cup Qualifiers, despite the fact that his contract with the Spanish Federation ends in 2020.

Per Marca, Scariolo wants to return to day-to-day coaching activities with a club. The Italian coach has had several offers from various European teams, including home-country teams FIAT Turin and Virtus Bologna. But his priority remains to join an NBA team as an assistant.

“I always had proposals to go to the NBA as an assistant but never as the ones I had this season,” Scariolo told Marca.

Spain will face reigning EuroBasket champion Slovenia in Ljubljana on June 28 and then play vs. Montenegro in Malaga, on July 1. The “Rojas” are currently first in Group A of the World Cup Qualifiers first stage, yet every result counts since the national teams carry their records to the next phase.

According to Encestando, the Spanish Basketball Federation considers Valencia head coach Txus Vidorreta as a candidate to succeed Scariolo.
