Darius Maskoliunas elected as the new coach of the Lithuanian national team

The former player who also serves as the assistant coach in Zalgiris Kaunas was named the new coach of the Lithuanian national team.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation took place in Kaunas on Tuesday, during which the new head coach of the Lithuanian men’s basketball team was elected.

Two nominations were submitted during the meeting. President of the Lithuanian Basketball coaches association Vydas Gedvilas nominated Antanas Sireikas and federation president Arvydas Sabonis proposed Darius Maskoliunas who ended up taking 13 out of 14 votes.

Maskoliunas, who is currently the coach of Zalgiris Kaunas, will lead the team in February’s “window” in the Eurobasket 2021 qualifiers and also in June’s pre-Olympic tournament.

A former player of Zalgiris Kaunas from 1992 until 1999 and from Prokom Trefl Sopot from 1999 until 2005, with a short stop during 2003 in Greece with Ilysiakos, Maskoliunas started his coaching career in 2007 as an assistant in Zalgiris Kaunas. He has been also the head coach for one season (2009-2010) and also an assistant and a head coach in Rytas Vilnius and in Prokom Trefl Sopot. Since 2015 he returned to Kaunas as an assistant in Zalgiris Kaunas.
