Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter’s father, Dr. Mehmet Kanter, was acquited of supporting terrorism and was released from jail, according to Turkish media. Mehmet Kanter had been arrested in 20018 on charges of “being a member of a terrorist group”.

He was facing up to a 15-year sentence for allegedly supporting exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has been accused of being the mastermind of the 2016 failed coup in Turkey.

Kanter tweeted about his father’s release from prison, saying that “this is due to the pressure we have put on the Turkish regime.” The Celtics big man is labeled a terrorist by the Turkish government due to his vocal support of Gulen. He had his passport canceled last year.
