It seems that the new NBA season won’t begin until 2021.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he thinks that the 2020-2021 NBA season won’t start before January. And that will be the “earliest” scenario.

“My best guess is that even though it will be the 2020-21 season, that season won’t start until ’21,” Silver said to CNN, per Mark Medina. The commissioner also mentioned that the goal for 2020-2021 is to have the full regular season package of 82 games.

The NBA was previously reported to be considering Christmas as a potential starting day for the 2020-2021 season.

An 82-game NBA season in 2020-2021 that won’t begin until January may create complications with the participation of league players to the Olympic Games. Since the basketball tournament of the 2021 Olympics is planned to begin on July 24, it will be practically impossible for any NBA players to participate, especially those of teams that will make the playoffs.
