Willie Green is expected to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, reports Andrew Lopez of ESPN.
Green, 39, is currently employed as an assistant coach by the Western Conference champions Phoenix Suns. His side is part of the 2021 NBA Finals facing the Milwaukee Bucks with the best-of-seven series tied, 2-2. His previous job as an assistant was with the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2019.
The former player and the Pelicans are expected to finalize a deal this week making him the eighth head coach in franchise history. He was already rumored to being the frontrunner for the position.
The Pelicans have missed both the 2019 and 2020 Playoffs. Their last postseason appearance in 2018 was ended by the Warriors in the Western Conference Semifinals.
