The countdown could be on for Zion Williamson’s long-awaited comeback. According to The Athletic, Williamson is cleared to progress in basketball activities after returning to New Orleans from Portland where he was rehabbing his foot injury.

The Pelicans said on Thursday (3/5) that there has been Williamson’s metatarsal bone has shown improved healing and is expected to slowly move on to more advanced exercises with weights and some basketball activities. There’s still no timetable for his return to action.

Williamson hasn’t played a game since May 5, 2021, and a 108-103 win over the Golden State Warriors. He suffered a fractured left finger that kept him out of the last games of the regular season and then had foot surgery to fix a broken fifth metatarsal bone on his right foot.

While Williamson expected to be ready to join the Pelicans once the regular season began, his foot still needed additional rehabbing and his 2021-22 debut was postponed indefinitely. On January, he continued rehabilitating in Portland.

Williamson had a stunning 2020-21 season before his injury setbacks, averaging 27.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He was named an All-Star the same year.
