Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro has been chosen as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year for the 2021-22 season, as announced by the league Tuesday. Herro is the first-ever Heat player to win this honour.
Herro, 22, earned 488 points from a global pool of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters (96 first-place votes). Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers came in second with 214 points (three first-place votes), while Cam Johnson of the Phoenix Suns followed in third place with 128 points (one first-place vote).
The Heat guard had a major contribution coming off of the bench this season. He played in 66 games, averaging 20.7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists across 32.6 minutes while shooting 44.7% from the field and 39.9% from the three-point line.
He averaged 20.8 points off the bench this season, more than any other reserve in the NBA, and his 1,162 bench points were the most by any reserve in the franchise’s history over the span of a single season.
Atlanta Hawks‘ Bogdan Bogdanovic received 10 votes total for the award, finishing in the sixth position of the voting, while Dallas Mavericks‘ Maxi Kleber got a single vote to tie Memphis Grizzlies‘ Brandon Clarke and Tyus Jones for 11th place.
