During the latest NBA Night, Victor Wembanyama got a standing ovation when entering Madison Square Garden in his debut on the road against the New York Knicks in one of the most famous venues in the world. He had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the San Antonio Spurs‘ 21-point (126-105) loss.

After the performance, Gregg Popovich talked about the French rookie. “He’s a 19-year-old rookie who just learned about the NBA. Of course, it’s a learning experience. We’re not putting him in situations until we know where he’s most comfortable and where he reacts the best”, the experienced head coach commented.

“I just figured out recently he likes one block more than the other block, and it’s the opposite of what you would think. So we need to observe him for a while and see where he naturally performs the best”, Gregg Popovich explained once more.

The former ASVEL and Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 player also shared his opinion following performing at the Mecca. “The challenge is always to stay lucid and keep our collective game. The most important thing is how we bounce back”, Victor Wembanyama said after the third straight defeat.

So far in the 2023-24 NBA Regular Season, his first one in the United States after being selected with the 1st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the 19-year-old has been averaging 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game with the San Antonio Spurs.
