Meetings between promising upstarts and uniquely built Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren can be an early look into the future of basketball. However, the first checkpoint is at the end of the 2023-24 season, and the winner of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

“I am convinced the best way for me to help my team is by also individually performing the whole season,” the French prodigy explained the importance of being named Rookie of the Year.

Wembanyama, 20, made his case on Thursday. After being forced to the wrong end of the two first clashes between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, he emerged as the first player to combine at least 25 points, ten rebounds, five assists, five blocks, and five three-pointers in a single game, paving the way for a win in Frost Bank Center.

“I think it was one of the best ways to come home after a month away,” he described his feelings on returning from the annual Rodeo Road Trip with a rare victory. His side went up to 12-48.

Thoroughly enjoying success was apparent, especially after picking up the microphone and leading ‘Go Spurs Go’ chants. “A win back from the Rodeo Road Trip with more than 16,000 people that I love. Best feeling,” he told the fans.

“He obviously is not afraid to put himself out there,” said head coach Gregg Popovich regarding the latest star from France on his roster.
