The Cleveland Cavaliers have won the sweepstakes to bring international star Mario Hezonja back to the NBA.
Per Shams Charania, Hezonja has agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal to sign with the Cavs.
Following a six-year hiatus from North America, the 31-year-old Croatian wing signed with the franchise immediately after the free-agency market unfroze. Front offices across the league had deliberately kept their roster flexibility on hold while awaiting LeBron James’ recent decision. From there, the Cavs pivoted aggressively to secure Hezonja the moment the market shifted. They managed to outmaneuver the Golden State Warriors, who were also actively pursuing the former fifth-overall draft pick to address structural gaps in their wing rotation.
Tight salary cap restrictions and punishing financial penalties restricted Cleveland from chasing higher-priced stars this summer. This reality made Hezonja the ideal low-risk, high-reward target on a cost-efficient deal.
The Dubrovnik native arrives highly motivated for his second opportunity in the NBA, having previously cleared an $850,000 buyout clause with EuroLeague powerhouse Real Madrid to facilitate the move. Though he previously logged 335 NBA games with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, he returns as a far more mature and polished playmaker than the raw prospect who left the league in 2020.
The Cavaliers are landing an elite international force at the absolute peak of his powers. Hezonja recently claimed Regular Season Most Valuable Player honors in Spain’s Liga Endesa and built a legendary European resume that includes a 2023 EuroLeague championship, alongside four ACB titles and a Greek League championship. A veteran of the FIBA World Cup 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, he joins a Cleveland squad intent on maximizing his proven pedigree and championship experience for a deep postseason run.
