The journey of an athlete rarely follows a linear path, but few trajectories are as fascinating as that of forward Ian Schieffelin.
After a productive four-year college basketball career with Clemson, where he averaged 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds during his final season, Schieffelin made a surprising pivot. Convinced by the Tigers’ football coach Dabo Swinney, he traded the hardwood for the gridiron, suiting up as a tight end for eight games in the 2025 season. The bold cross-sport experiment provided him with a unique blend of physical conditioning and mental toughness that few modern prospects possess.
However, his heart never truly left the basketball court. That dedication paid dividends when the Miami Heat offered the undrafted forward an opportunity to showcase his skills during the Summer League. Schieffelin capitalised on the moment immediately, turning heads with a highly efficient 16-point performance against the Milwaukee Bucks while demonstrating remarkable versatility and high-energy court awareness. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per Summer League contest.
These showings positioned him for the next major milestone of his career. The Heat are expected to reward his efforts by signing him to an Exhibit 10 contract, securing his spot in training camp to compete for a coveted standard or two-way roster slot, as projected by the Miami Herald on Monday. This development places the physical forward in a unique position within a reconfigured franchise.
If he makes the opening night roster, the former collegiate tight end will transition from catching footballs to sharing the court with newly acquired Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
