Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from Sunday’s game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky after a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
Kanter Freedom was sitting courtside in a black T-shirt that read: “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”
When a timeout was called late in the third quarter, Cloud walked toward Kanter Freedom and shouted at him. He was standing with his arms outstretched and took a few steps toward the court before security cut him off and directed him to leave.
Cloud was held back by teammates and security as she continued to shout and point at Kanter Freedom. She spoke with team and league security after Chicago’s 113-90 loss but did not address the media.
Enes Kanter Freedom declares for 2027 WNBA Draft
Enes Kanter Freedom announced last Friday his intention to officially declare himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft, in an initiative he presents as a challenge to the current eligibility and inclusion policies of the American women’s league.
Through a statement posted on his social media, Kanter stated that, after reviewing the rules governing the WNBA with his team, he believes he meets the necessary requirements to register as a candidate.
“After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I officially declare myself a WNBA prospect,” wrote the former center. “If simply declaring who you are is all that is required, then I meet all the necessary requirements to compete in the WNBA.”
Kanter claimed that his decision is a response to an interpretation of the current rules on gender identity and sports participation. According to him, his legal team has analyzed the competition’s eligibility criteria and concludes he can officially present his candidacy for the Draft scheduled for April 2027.
