Warriors legend Steph Curry gained the right to sign a new contract this weekend, but the San Francisco organization’s front office has left the negotiations entirely up to the veteran star’s initiative.
Curry has the option to sign a two-year max contract worth $136.7 million, which would keep him with the team until he turns 40.
According to Anthony Slater of ESPN, the Warriors‘ management is providing their star with complete freedom instead of engaging in active negotiations. They are ready to sign Curry to any contract he desires, regardless of the duration or amount of money.
Due to the “38-year-old rule,” Curry – whose current $62.6 million contract expires at the end of this season – can only receive a two-year extension. There is also the possibility that the team’s star might postpone signing the agreement until the summer months to create the necessary salary cap space, allowing the organization to pursue new free agents.
The fact that key players like Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler are entering the final year of their contracts will affect the team’s financial flexibility. However, Steph is fully confident about the direction of his career: “There is no doubt that I want to stay here until the end of my career, and I am absolutely confident that this will happen.”
The experienced guard played in just 43 games last season due to a knee injury, averaging 24.8 points and 4.7 assists.
