The upcoming 2026–27 NBA Regular Season represents a definitive turning point for Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.
Though the Serbian superstar has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay in Colorado long-term and is widely considered likely to sign a contract extension next summer, the franchise surely cannot afford to squander another year of his prime.
Waiting until next summer makes financial sense. At that point, the Joker can land a projected five-year, $360 million extension. Even though league insiders expect the three-time Most Valuable Player to stay put, Denver must not get comfortable. If the team falls out of championship contention, the incentive to leave could grow.
If Jokic declines his player option for the 2027–28 season to become an unrestricted free agent, he could sign elsewhere for a projected $267 million over four years. This gap could narrow for other franchises playing in a more tax-favorable environment. The financial edge includes a main advantage of $82 million guaranteed for a fifth season, but a better chance to win might make a departure worth considering.
Since their 2023 championship success, management has been shuffling the supporting cast to find the right depth around their talisman. Navigating strict salary cap limitations this offseason, head coach David Adelman must now make several new roster pieces work. The drive to show Jokic they can build a winner begins now.
From Monday’s preseason media day to training camp, Denver will continue with five exhibition matches before opening the regular season on October 22 against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center.
